First National Bank Botswana (FNBB) has announced the appointment of Mathews Tito Phetogo as Chief Operating Officer (COO), effective January 1, 2025. A qualified Fellow Certified Chartered Accountant (FCCA), Phetogo began his career at the Office of the Auditor General, conducting audits and special investigations for parastatal organizations. Transitioning into financial accounting, Phetogo held leadership roles at the Non-Bank Financial Institutions Regulatory Authority (NBFIRA) and Orange Botswana before joining FNBB. Within the bank, he played a pivotal role as Head of Finance, Risk, and Operations for Global Markets before advancing to Head of Operations at Rand Merchant Bank Botswana (RMB). There, he led operational strategies, including foreign exchange payments, trade and working capital, and custodial services.
Prior to his new appointment, Phetogo served as FNBB’s Deputy COO, driving the bank’s Operational Efficiency strategy and overseeing system development, process improvements, and business restructuring. He has also made notable contributions to the financial sector through leadership positions with the Bankers Association of Botswana and the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Payments Scheme Management Body.
Beyond his executive roles, Phetogo has served on the boards of Botswana Post and Boitekanelo Group. He holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Botswana and has completed executive programs at the University of Stellenbosch and Wits Business School. His appointment is expected to enhance FNBB’s operational strategies, reinforcing its position as a leader in Botswana’s banking sector.
