BTU Supports Flood-Affected Linchwe JSS Teachers with Grocery Vouchers. The Botswana Teachers Union (BTU) has stepped in to support teachers at Linchwe Junior Secondary School (JSS) after severe flooding devastated their living quarters and school facilities. The union provided grocery vouchers worth P2,500 to affected members, helping them recover from the crisis.

The flooding left teachers’ accommodations submerged in contaminated water, destroying their belongings, including essential food supplies. The school’s infrastructure suffered extensive damage, with the garden wall collapsing and the kitchen rendered unsafe due to sewage contamination. The situation has raised serious concerns about food security and health risks for both teachers and students.

During a visit to assess the damage, BTU President Comrade Gotlamang Oitsile expressed deep concern for the affected educators. “We understand the immense hardship our members are facing,” he said. “These vouchers are a small gesture of support during this incredibly challenging time. We are committed to standing with our members and advocating for their needs.”

The donation underscores BTU’s dedication to member welfare, reinforcing the union’s role as a strong advocate for teachers’ rights and well-being. The affected teachers expressed heartfelt gratitude, emphasizing that the assistance would help them rebuild their lives after losing everything.

The BTU delegation included key officials such as Publicity Secretary Comrade Innocent Puso, OSH Secretary Comrade Tshepo Diphale, Mochudi Regional Organiser Comrade Shapi, and others. Their presence highlighted the union’s solidarity with its members in times of crisis.

As Linchwe JSS works to recover from the disaster, the BTU’s swift response serves as a crucial reminder of the importance of collective support in the education sector. The incident also raises concerns about infrastructure resilience and the need for long-term solutions to protect schools from such disasters in the future.
