Botswana Marks Historic Milestone as President Boko Leads Delegation to U.S. for BOTSAT-1 Satellite Launch. President Duma Gideon Boko of Botswana has embarked on a working visit to the United States from 1st to 9th March 2025 to witness the launch of Botswana’s first satellite, BOTSAT-1. The launch is scheduled for 5th March 2025 in Los Angeles, California, marking a significant step in Botswana’s entry into the global space sector.
BOTSAT-1 is designed to enhance Botswana’s capabilities in satellite data generation, with potential applications across critical industries such as mining, agriculture, and urban planning. The project was developed by a team of engineers from the Botswana International University of Science and Technology (BIUST), showcasing the country’s growing expertise in space technology.
President Boko’s visit includes a series of engagements beyond the satellite launch. He is set to tour leading aerospace facilities, including SpaceX’s Rocket Production and Starlink Mini Production plants. These site visits aim to deepen Botswana’s understanding of advanced manufacturing in the space industry.
In addition, the President is scheduled to hold high-level bilateral meetings focused on strengthening international partnerships and promoting investment opportunities in Botswana. Discussions are expected to cover trade, tourism, and technological collaboration.
Accompanying President Boko are Honourable Dr. David Tshere, Minister of Communications and Innovation; Honourable Mr. Prince Maele, Minister of Higher Education; and Professor Otlogetswe Totolo, Vice Chancellor of BIUST, alongside other senior government officials.
The BOTSAT-1 launch represents a new chapter for Botswana, highlighting the nation’s commitment to technological advancement and capacity building within the rapidly growing space industry.
