Botswana Successfully Launches First Satellite, BOTSAT-1, Into Orbit. Botswana has officially entered the space era with the successful launch of its first satellite, BOTSAT-1. The satellite was launched aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California, USA, on March 14, 2025 (Pacific Time), or March 15, 2025, Botswana Time.
The launch represents a major milestone in Botswana’s space ambitions and is the result of years of dedicated work under the BOTSAT Project. The initiative has been spearheaded by the Botswana International University of Science and Technology (BIUST) in collaboration with local and international partners.
Following the deployment of BOTSAT-1 into orbit, the project has now entered the critical Early Orbit Operations (LEOP) phase, during which the satellite’s systems will be closely monitored and tested. The primary mission of BOTSAT-1 is to provide Earth observation data for agriculture, environmental monitoring, and disaster response.
This achievement is a historic step for Botswana, demonstrating the country’s growing capabilities in space science and technology. Beyond its immediate applications, the success of BOTSAT-1 is expected to pave the way for future investments in satellite technology, STEM education, and international space collaborations.
The BOTSAT team, in partnership with government ministries, academic institutions, and industry stakeholders, will continue to provide updates as the satellite progresses through its commissioning phase.
