The five-year partnership focuses on fostering a robust innovation ecosystem in Botswana, with several initiatives to catalyze economic diversification. These include the introduction of a fellowship program for African entrepreneurs, leveraging artificial intelligence to accelerate the country’s digitization, and the establishment of MIT’s Sandbox Program to promote entrepreneurship in Botswana. Additionally, Botswana will participate in the prestigious MIT REAP (Regional Entrepreneurship Acceleration Program), further enhancing the nation’s innovation capabilities.
Permanent Secretary Kabelo A. Ebineng, representing Botswana’s Ministry of Entrepreneurship, emphasized the country’s ambitions to become a high-income nation through innovation-driven enterprise. “Botswana seeks to develop its economy through continuous innovation and enhanced value chains that not only allow for regional integration but also elevate global competitiveness,” Ebineng noted.

The Legatum Center, renowned for advancing sustainable prosperity in global growth markets, brings a wealth of expertise to the partnership. Since its inception, the center has supported over 326 Student Fellows from 57 countries, creating 286 ventures that have generated over 17,000 direct jobs and served 17 million customers globally.

Sherif, Executive Director of the Legatum Center, expressed optimism about the collaboration’s potential impact. “This partnership is an opportunity not just for Botswana, but for Africa as a whole. By fostering a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship, we aim to transition Botswana from reliance on natural resources to a knowledge-based economy capable of transforming lives and driving sustainable growth,” she stated.
