The Projects Magazine, in collaboration with the Botswana Chamber of Mines (BCM), recently hosted the Future of Mining 2024 Summit Post-Event in Gaborone. The event brought together government leaders, industry stakeholders, and investors to evaluate the outcomes of the June summit and outline plans for the upcoming edition.
Support for Local Manufacturing
In his welcome remarks, Charles Siwawa, CEO of BCM, emphasized the importance of collective industry efforts to support local manufacturing.
“If one company supports the local manufacturing processes, it will not have the same impact as if all the mining industries put together to support this particular process,” Siwawa noted. He commended local manufacturers for leveraging the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) to access broader African markets. Siwawa highlighted an innovative example of successful cross-border trade between Botswana and Namibia as a model for other businesses.
Mining’s Dual Dynamics
Former Minister Hon. Bogolo Kenewendo underscored the crucial role of the mining industry in Botswana’s economy. She reflected on the contrasting dynamics within the sector, where some areas thrive while others face challenges.
“Since the mining industry is crucial to the performance of Botswana’s economy, it demands the best and the most of us,” Kenewendo said, stressing the importance of resilience and adaptability in navigating the industry’s cycles.
Collaborative Transformation
Vice President Ndaba Gaolathe delivered the keynote address, focusing on the importance of collaboration between the government and private sector in driving transformation.
“The transformation will not come from the government but from the people in the room,” Gaolathe declared, emphasizing the need to empower individuals on the ground and dismantle barriers to progress.
Positioning Botswana as a Mining Hub
The Future of Mining Summit, endorsed by the Government of Botswana through the Ministry of Minerals and Energy, has established itself as a premier platform for strategic discussions shaping the future of Botswana’s mining sector. The conference aims to solidify Botswana’s position as Africa’s leading mining investment destination, aligning with Vision 2036 and the lessons learned from the COVID-19 pandemic.
Commitment to Sustainability and Partnerships
The event reaffirmed Botswana’s dedication to strengthening local manufacturing, fostering partnerships, and ensuring long-term sustainability within the mining sector. As the nation moves forward, the summit continues to serve as a catalyst for innovation, collaboration, and the strategic transformation of Botswana’s mining landscape.
With plans already underway for the next edition, the Future of Mining Summit remains an essential forum for shaping Botswana’s economic growth and development in the global mining arena.
