Botswana Clarifies Bonno National Housing Programme to Support Inclusive Homeownership. The government has reaffirmed its commitment to providing affordable and accessible housing through the Bonno National Housing Programme, aligning with Vision 2036, National Development Plans (NDP 11 & 12), and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 11) on sustainable cities and communities.
At a press briefing, Minister of Water and Human Settlement, Onneetse Ramogapi, emphasized that the initiative is a critical tool for ensuring that Batswana have access to quality and dignified housing. He outlined the programme’s structure, which is designed to accommodate different income groups and economic circumstances.
The Bonno National Housing Programme includes several schemes catering to diverse financial brackets:
- Integrated Poverty Alleviation and Housing Scheme – Supports individuals without formal employment.
- Social Housing (Destitute Housing and RDP) – Focused on assisting Botswana’s most vulnerable citizens.Bonno Turnkey Housing Scheme – Targets individuals earning between P4,400 and P95,000 annually.
- Bonno Home Loan Improvement Scheme – Provides financial assistance for home renovations within the same income bracket.
- Bonno D4 Equivalent and Below – Designed for those earning between P95,001 and P282,120 annually.
- Rent-to-Buy Scheme – A collaboration with Botswana Housing Corporation (BHC) and private developers, allowing tenants to transition into homeowners.
- District and Institutional Housing – The government is exploring ways to offer ownership opportunities to employees in these sectors.
The programme is expected to boost homeownership, stimulate local construction, and strengthen Botswana’s housing sector, ensuring long-term sustainability for businesses and citizens alike.
