Botswana Launches Sustainable Wildlife Management Legal Hub to Strengthen Conservation Efforts. Botswana has taken a significant step in its commitment to sustainable conservation with the launch of the Sustainable Wildlife Management (SWM) Programme Legal Hub. The initiative, led by the Ministry of Environment and Tourism in collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and key partners, aims to streamline legal frameworks governing wildlife conservation.
Speaking at the launch, Minister of Environment and Tourism, Hon. Wynter Mmolotsi, emphasized the importance of legal structures in protecting biodiversity. He acknowledged the financial and technical support from the European Union, the French Development Agency, FAO, and other international partners, stating that the Legal Hub represents a milestone in Botswana’s efforts to ensure sustainable use of natural resources for both current and future generations.
The SWM Programme Legal Hub will serve as a centralized platform, providing easy access to all legislation related to wildlife conservation. Mmolotsi described it as a “One Stop Legal Shop” aimed at simplifying compliance for communities, policymakers, conservationists, and investors. The hub will also play a vital role in identifying gaps in existing legislation and aligning Botswana’s conservation laws with global best practices.
Mayor of Gaborone, Hon. Oarabile Motlaleng, highlighted the Gaborone Game Reserve as an example of how urban conservation can coexist with development. He noted that while the SWM Programme is currently focused on the Okavango District (NG8), its lessons can help cities like Gaborone integrate sustainability into urban planning.
Acting Permanent Secretary, Ms. Masego Mooketsi, expressed gratitude to development partners, stating that the Legal Hub is a crucial resource for rural communities that depend on natural resources. She reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to ensuring the portal benefits all stakeholders in wildlife conservation.
