Botswana President Opens 2025 SADC Sustainable Energy Week, Calls for Action on Renewable Energy. Advocate Duma Gideon Boko, President of the Republic of Botswana, officially inaugurated the 2025 SADC Sustainable Energy Week in Gaborone under the theme: “Accelerating Sustainable Energy Solutions for an Energy Secure SADC Region.”
In his keynote address, President Boko stressed the urgent need to enhance regional energy security, promote sustainable development, and accelerate the transition to renewable energy sources. He emphasized the importance of stronger partnerships among SADC nations, greater private sector participation, and the implementation of actionable policies to unlock the region’s vast renewable energy potential, including solar, wind, hydropower, and geothermal resources.
As part of Botswana’s commitment to sustainable energy development, the country aims to increase its electricity production to 8,000MW over the next four years, with a significant focus on solar power. This ambitious initiative aligns with Botswana’s global climate commitments and is expected to drive economic growth and job creation across the nation.
“The message is clear: The time for talk is over. It’s time to act! Let’s work together to build a future where every home, business, and industry in SADC has access to clean, affordable, and reliable energy,” President Boko declared.
The opening of the 2025 SADC Sustainable Energy Week marks a significant step forward in the region’s efforts to secure its energy future and transition toward a more sustainable and resilient energy system.
