Botswana Teachers Union Suspends Activities Due to Flash Floods. The Botswana Teachers Union (BTU) has announced the cancellation of all union activities nationwide following widespread flash flooding caused by heavy rains. The decision was made by the union’s National Executive Committee (NEC) as a safety precaution for its members and the general public.
In an official statement, the BTU confirmed that activities involving its union organs, the Botswana Teachers Union Members Burial Society (BOTUBS), BT SACCOS, and the Business Wing have been suspended until further notice. The move aims to minimize risks associated with the current adverse weather conditions.
Additionally, the NEC decided to temporarily close the BTU offices in Gaborone and Mogoditshane from Thursday, February 20, 2025, to Friday, February 21, 2025. This measure is intended to ensure the safety of employees and their families during this period of heavy rainfall and flash flooding.
The BTU stated that its decision was informed by reports and forecasts from the Department of Meteorological Services and updates from the National Disaster Management officials. These assessments have highlighted the severity of the flooding and its impact on various communities.
BTU has urged its members to postpone any planned travel and to monitor conditions in their respective areas to safeguard themselves and their property. The union also encouraged members to stay updated on official government communications for further developments.
