Botswana Tourism Organisation Engages Stakeholders on Ecotourism Standards Review. In an effort to align Botswana’s ecotourism sector with global sustainability benchmarks, the Botswana Tourism Organisation (BTO) is reviewing the Botswana Ecotourism Certification System (BECS) for accommodation and eco-tours. The initiative seeks to ensure that Botswana’s ecotourism practices meet the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) criteria, a key step toward gaining international recognition.
As part of this process, BTO, in collaboration with Geoflux Consultants, held a stakeholder engagement session in Maun to gather input from industry players. The consultation workshop was officially opened by District Commissioner Thabang Waloka, underscoring the importance of industry collaboration in shaping the country’s ecotourism standards.
Achieving GSTC recognition for Botswana’s Ecotourism Certification System is expected to bring multiple benefits to the industry, including enhanced sustainability practices, improved market access, increased global competitiveness, capacity building, and economic growth through job creation.
BTO reiterated its commitment to maintaining Botswana’s reputation as a leading ecotourism destination while ensuring that its tourism sector operates in a sustainable and responsible manner. The organisation encouraged continued engagement from industry stakeholders as the review process progresses.
