Botswana’s first UniPod launches: Pioneering innovation and youth empowerment

In a groundbreaking move set to redefine innovation and youth development in Botswana, the University of Botswana (UB), in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Botswana International University of Science and Technology (BIUST), the Ministry of Higher Education (MoHE), and other key stakeholders, is launching the country’s first University Innovation Pod (UniPod).

The official launch will take place on Monday, 16th December 2024, at 1500hrs at the University of Botswana Innovation Centre, Block 222. The event will feature the Minister of Higher Education, Mr. Mooketsi Prince Maele, who will perform the ceremonial opening of this transformative facility.

What is the UniPod?

The UniPod is a state-of-the-art innovation hub aimed at empowering youth, nurturing creativity, and transforming groundbreaking ideas into practical, market-ready solutions. This facility, which began its journey with a groundbreaking ceremony in October 2024, is poised to revolutionize Botswana’s economic landscape by bridging the gap between higher education and industry.

With cutting-edge tools and resources, the UniPod is equipped to support innovators at every stage of their journey. It features:

Makerspaces and Fabrication Laboratories (Fab Labs) with advanced equipment such as 3D printers, laser cutters, and prototyping materials.

Co-working spaces and creative studios for collaboration and idea development.

Empowering the Next Generation

Beyond infrastructure, the UniPod will provide a holistic support system for young creators. Programs include:

Mentorship opportunities with industry leaders.
