The arid Boteti region of northern Botswana, known for its proximity to the Orapa Diamond Mine and the vast Makgadikgadi Salt Pans, has long struggled with access to clean, potable water. Historically, villagers in the region relied on salty underground water with an unpleasant odor, a health hazard for prolonged use. However, this dire situation has been revolutionized by the completion of the Boteti Water Supply Project, spearheaded by China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation Botswana (CCECC Botswana).
The Challenge: Decades Without Fresh Water
Boteti’s scattered villages and lack of freshwater resources had delayed investments in water infrastructure. Underground water in the region contained high salinity levels, making it unsuitable for drinking and daily use. Villagers like Mmabaledi Tebalo, who grew up using salty water, recounted the health challenges and hardships they endured.
A Game-Changing Project
In February 2023, CCECC Botswana began the monumental task of constructing the Boteti Water Supply Project, completing it in just 18 months. The initiative included:
• 184 kilometers of water pipelines
• Four booster pump stations
• Ten elevated water tanks
• Three concrete reservoirs
• A state-of-the-art water treatment plant
• Additional infrastructure like two administrative buildings, ten staff apartments, and facilities for electricity and remote sensing.
The project officially began supplying clean water in September 2024, marking a historic moment for over 30,000 villagers across eight local communities, including Mokobaxane Village.
A New Era for Villagers
For Mokobaxane residents, the availability of clean tap water has been life-changing. Villagers now exclaim, “No more drinking salty water!” as they celebrate the convenience and health benefits brought by the project.
Bomgere Jane, Chairperson of the Village Development Committee, expressed heartfelt gratitude, saying, “The Chinese construction company has brought us a great project. The water now is excellent, and life has become much more convenient.”
The water treatment plant boasts a daily capacity of 4,000 cubic meters, providing consistent clean water to meet the needs of the Boteti region. Since its commissioning, the facility has supplied 140,000 cubic meters of clean tap water.
Economic and Social Benefits
Beyond improving water access, the project has spurred significant economic and social development in Boteti.
• At its peak, the project employed 600 local workers, providing skills training and job opportunities.
• Local businesses, including suppliers of building materials, housing rentals, and catering services, have seen increased demand.
• Workers like Montgomery Peter, who earns over 5,300 pula (US$390) monthly as a driver, now enjoy improved incomes and better livelihoods.
Yang Weimin, Project Manager for CCECC Botswana, emphasized the broader impact: “The project has not only improved the water supply but also contributed to the region’s economic vitality by creating jobs and fostering local expertise.”
A Testament to Collaboration
The success of the Boteti Water Supply Project is a testament to the collaboration between Botswana’s government, Water Utilities Corporation, and CCECC Botswana. The project has demonstrated how innovative engineering and international partnerships can address critical challenges in developing regions.
Looking Ahead
As clean water flows through the pipelines of Boteti, the region looks forward to a brighter, healthier future. The project’s completion highlights the transformative potential of infrastructure investments and strengthens the bond between Botswana and its international partners.
“This project is a milestone in our journey towards providing basic necessities for all,” a government spokesperson remarked. “It’s a symbol of hope and progress for the Boteti region.”
