Debswana OLDM Donates Porta Cabin Classrooms to Rakops Junior Secondary School. In a significant boost to local education, Debswana Orapa, Letlhakane, and Damtshaa Mines (OLDM), in collaboration with its Project Management Office (PMO) department and business partners, has donated eight fully furnished porta cabin classrooms to Rakops Junior Secondary School.
The donation, valued at over P1.3 million, comes as a response to pressing classroom shortages identified during consultations with the school’s management and village leadership. The initiative aims to improve learning conditions and alleviate overcrowding, ensuring that students have a conducive environment for their education.
Speaking at the handover ceremony, Debswana Managing Director, Mr. Andrew Maatla Motsomi, emphasized the company’s commitment to community development despite current economic challenges.“Through our Building Forever Strategy, we aim to be a catalyst for better education, health, and livelihoods in our host communities, working alongside the government to deliver quality education,” said Motsomi.
General Manager of Debswana OLDM, Mr. Mogakolodi Maoketsa, highlighted that the donation resulted from direct engagement with the school and local leadership. He reaffirmed Debswana’s dedication to social responsibility, ensuring that education remains a priority in the company’s development initiatives.“After assessing the school’s most pressing needs, we identified classroom shortages as a critical issue. This project is a direct response to that challenge,” said Maoketsa.
Representing the Ministry of Child Welfare and Basic Education, Acting Director for the Central Region, Mr. Otukile Kedikilwe, expressed profound gratitude for the timely intervention.“This generous contribution will not only benefit current and future learners at Rakops Junior Secondary School but also help ease some of the financial pressures faced by the Ministry,” said Kedikilwe.
The porta cabin classrooms will provide immediate relief to overcrowded learning spaces, reinforcing Debswana’s role in supporting national education goals. As the government continues working to improve education infrastructure, corporate partnerships like this highlight the power of collaboration in driving sustainable development in Botswana.
