Flooding Crisis in Botswana Disrupts Businesses and Economy. Heavy rains have triggered severe flooding across Botswana, particularly in the capital, Gaborone, causing widespread disruptions to businesses and economic activities. The relentless downpour has forced authorities to close major roads, affecting supply chains, retail operations, and essential services.

Several key roads, including the A1 near Botswana University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (BUAN), Block 9 bridges, and parts of the Gaborone/Kanye road, are impassable. The road closures have hindered deliveries, preventing businesses from receiving stock and impacting consumer access to goods and services. Retailers, restaurants, and other enterprises reliant on foot traffic are experiencing a sharp decline in sales due to mobility constraints.

The hospitality and tourism sector is also feeling the strain, with hotel bookings being canceled and travel disruptions affecting visitors. Additionally, small businesses, especially informal traders, are at risk of losing revenue, as outdoor markets and street vendors are unable to operate in flooded areas.

Beyond retail and tourism, the flooding is also affecting corporate operations. Many offices have been forced to close or shift to remote work, disrupting productivity and delaying business transactions. Power outages and water supply issues further compound the challenges, making it difficult for companies to maintain normal operations.

In response to the crisis, the government has shut down all government schools until February 24, 2025. Parliament has also adjourned to allow lawmakers to assess the situation and support emergency response efforts.
