Gambling Authority Warns Against Unlicensed Operations Under 2012 Act. The Gambling Authority has issued a stern warning to the public regarding the legal consequences of operating an unlicensed gambling establishment in Botswana. Citing the Gambling Act of 2012, the Authority reminded citizens that running such operations without a valid license is a serious offense punishable by heavy fines and imprisonment.
According to the provisions outlined in the Act, a person found guilty of operating a gambling establishment without proper authorization may face a fine not exceeding P180,000 or imprisonment for a term not exceeding 15 years. The law is even stricter for repeat offenders, who may be fined up to P240,000 or sentenced to a maximum of 20 years in prison.
The Gambling Authority reiterated its commitment to maintaining order in the gaming industry and promoting responsible gambling practices. The agency emphasized that the regulations are in place to protect consumers and ensure that gambling activities occur in a controlled, lawful, and transparent environment.
The Authority also highlighted the availability of support services for individuals affected by problem gambling. These include a toll-free Responsible Gaming line (19777), a USSD self-help option (*228#), and a dedicated online portal (selfhelp.gamblingauthority.co.bw). Additionally, the public is encouraged to report any instances of corruption or illegal gambling activity through established anti-corruption channels.
