Giyani Secures SEZ Licence for Manganese Plant in Botswana. Giyani Metals Corp., a developer of battery-grade manganese for electric vehicles (EVs), has achieved a significant milestone by securing a 50-year Special Economic Zone (SEZ) Investor Licence for its high-purity manganese sulfate monohydrate (HPMSM) commercial plant in Botswana. This licence not only reinforces Giyani’s commitment to sustainable development but also highlights Botswana’s efforts to position itself as a key player in the global EV supply chain.

A Strategic Move for Botswana’s Economy

The SEZ licence, awarded to Giyani’s subsidiary Thabatala Technology Company, designates the planned commercial plant as a Single Factory Special Economic Zone. Situated near the K.Hill manganese mine in Kanye, Botswana, the facility is set to enhance the country’s economic landscape by creating jobs, fostering local business growth, and contributing to community development initiatives.

The approval process for the licence was rigorous, with the Special Economic Zone Authority (SEZA) evaluating Giyani’s environmental, economic, and social credentials. The licence, valid for 50 years and renewable, offers a range of fiscal and operational incentives designed to improve project viability and operational efficiency.

A Commitment to Sustainability and Inclusion

Giyani’s commitment to sustainable operations is evident in its adherence to international environmental standards and its focus on fostering local economic inclusion. The company aims to empower Botswana’s workforce and businesses by creating supply chain opportunities and supporting community-driven projects.

A Milestone for the EV Industry

Giyani’s CEO, Charles FitzRoy, expressed gratitude for SEZA’s support, emphasizing that this achievement is a transformative step toward establishing the company as a leading producer of battery-grade manganese. With its proprietary hydrometallurgical process, Giyani is poised to become a significant contributor to the EV industry, addressing the growing demand for low-carbon, high-purity battery materials.

Giyani is now focused on obtaining additional sectoral permits and licences to commence construction of the commercial plant. With the first production from its demonstration plant anticipated soon, the company is on track to meet its ambitious goals for 2025.
