In a significant development for Botswana’s engineering and energy sectors, Jindal Africa, in partnership with the Ministry of Labour and Home Affairs, issued letters of acceptance to 20 young Batswana graduate engineers on December 16, 2024. These engineers will be integrated into the ambitious Mmamabula Power Development Project, marking a milestone in youth employment and skills development.
Empowering Local Talent
The appointments stem from a Human Resource Agreement between the Government of Botswana and Jindal Africa. Under the agreement, Jindal Africa committed to train and transfer skills to Batswana, reinforcing the nation’s human capital in the engineering sector. The 20 selected engineers will initially join the Mmamabula Power Project, with the promise of permanent employment during its operational phase.
Speaking on behalf of the Minister of Labour and Home Affairs, Permanent Secretary Mr. Rule Jimmy Opelo highlighted the Ministry’s commitment to sustainable job creation and economic diversification. He revealed that 20 local engineers will be absorbed annually by Jindal Africa, ensuring a continuous pipeline of skilled professionals for the project.
Commitment to Worker Welfare
Mr. Opelo assured that the Ministry would enforce strict compliance with the agreement, ensuring that the young engineers operate in a conducive and safe working environment. Regular inspections will be conducted to uphold Labour and Occupational Health and Safety Laws, safeguarding the well-being and rights of the workforce.

The engineers, hailing from institutions like Botho University, the University of Botswana, and BIUST (Botswana International University of Science and Technology), represent a diverse range of engineering disciplines.
