Lobatse Clay Works Relaunches: A Game-Changer for Botswana’s Industrial Growth. Lobatse Clay Works (LCW), a cornerstone of Botswana’s manufacturing sector, has been officially relaunched under the Botswana Development Corporation’s (BDC) ambitious turnaround strategy. The relaunch ceremony, held on September 24, 2024, was officiated by Honourable Mmusi Kgafela, Minister of Trade and Industry, marking a new chapter in the nation’s push for economic diversification and industrial growth.
A Symbol of Resilience and Transformation
During the event, BDC Managing Director Cross Kgosidiile described the revitalised LCW as a testament to Botswana’s industrial potential. “The revival of Lobatse Clay Works exemplifies BDC’s dedication to investing in industries that not only generate profits but also drive socio-economic growth,” said Kgosidiile. He expressed gratitude to the government for supporting BDC’s strategic direction, which includes undertaking transformative projects critical to the nation’s future.
Honourable Minister Kgafela underscored LCW’s role in Botswana’s industrialisation agenda. “This relaunch is a testament to turning challenges into opportunities while preserving our industrial foundation,” he noted, highlighting how LCW aligns with Botswana’s Industrial Development Policy and broader vision to achieve high-income status by 2036.
A State-of-the-Art Facility with Regional Ambitions
The modernised LCW facility boasts advanced technology and an annual production capacity of 36 million bricks, positioning it among the region’s most sophisticated clay product manufacturers. The enhancements will enable LCW to meet the growing demand for quality building materials in Botswana, particularly for schools and infrastructure projects.
Caretaker CEO of LCW, Ms. Boitshwarelo Lebang-Kgetse, highlighted the facility’s focus on innovation. “From advanced automation in clay processing to energy-efficient kilns, we are committed to delivering premium products at competitive prices,” she said. LCW is now well-placed to secure lucrative government contracts, contributing significantly to Southern Africa’s urbanisation and infrastructure needs.
A Catalyst for Local Economic Development
His Lordship, Mayor Mosimanegape Dithebe, celebrated LCW’s relaunch as a turning point for Lobatse and surrounding communities. “This revival is a cornerstone for socio-economic development, creating jobs and injecting life into our local economy,” he remarked. The project is expected to generate 240 jobs at full capacity, offering renewed hope and income to many families in the area.
The relaunch also aligns with Botswana’s Reset Agenda, which prioritises economic transformation through strategic investments. Mayor Dithebe commended BDC for its visionary approach, citing other initiatives like Delta Automotive Technologies and Milk Afric as examples of the Corporation’s commitment to Lobatse’s development.
Established in 1992 as a wholly-owned subsidiary of BDC, LCW has been instrumental in Botswana’s industrial progress. However, operational challenges forced the plant to halt activities in 2017. BDC’s turnaround strategy addressed these challenges by adopting cutting-edge technologies and sustainable business practices, ensuring LCW’s long-term profitability and competitiveness.
With its advanced capabilities and focus on quality, Lobatse Clay Works is poised to reclaim its leadership in the clay product industry and contribute to Botswana’s economic transformation. The relaunch signifies more than just a revived factory—it represents a commitment to progress, innovation, and the socio-economic upliftment of Botswana and its people.
