Orange Botswana Commits P1 Million Annually to Phikwe Marathon, Boosting Local Economy and Sports Tourism. Orange Botswana has announced a major investment in Selebi-Phikwe, pledging P1 million annually over the next three years to support the Phikwe National Marathon. The sponsorship, totaling P3 million through 2027, aims to strengthen the town’s economic revival efforts and expand its potential as a destination for sports tourism.

Speaking at the announcement, Orange Botswana CEO Néné Maïga highlighted the broader impact of the sponsorship. “This is not just about athletics; it’s about economic opportunity, tourism, and community pride,” she said.

The Phikwe National Marathon, which has seen growing support since Orange Botswana’s initial involvement in 2016, has become one of the country’s most significant sporting events. It attracts runners and supporters from across Botswana and neighbouring countries, offering a platform for both competition and economic activity.

With the new funding, the marathon is expected to enhance its logistics, increase prize offerings, and expand visibility through Orange Botswana’s digital platforms. Planned features include real-time race tracking and increased social media engagement, aimed at boosting national and regional interest.

Since the closure of the BCL Mine, Selebi-Phikwe has sought alternative ways to stimulate its economy. The marathon has emerged as a vital contributor by drawing visitors who support local vendors, hospitality services, and other small businesses.

Officials from the Selebi-Phikwe Town Council and the Local Organising Committee have welcomed the renewed support, describing it as a significant step toward revitalising the town and its future.

Orange Botswana’s continued investment underscores its belief in sports as a powerful tool for community development, job creation, and youth empowerment—anchoring Selebi-Phikwe as a growing hub for sporting and economic activity in Botswana.
