President Duma Gideon Boko has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to transforming Botswana’s agricultural sector as a cornerstone for the nation’s long-term prosperity. Speaking during his State of the Nation Address, President Boko outlined a vision centered on boosting agricultural productivity, enhancing food security, and promoting sustainable farming practices.
A Vision for Sustainable Agriculture
The President emphasized the importance of modernizing agriculture through innovative approaches such as improving soil health and implementing sustainable practices. He highlighted the government’s plans to support small-scale farmers, recognizing their critical role in ensuring food security and driving rural development.
“Our goal is to empower farmers with the tools, knowledge, and resources they need to thrive. Agriculture is not just an economic activity but a path to self-sufficiency and resilience for our nation,” President Boko said.
Selibe Phikwe Citrus Farm Visit
As part of his efforts to promote agricultural awareness and understand the challenges faced by farmers, President Boko recently visited the Selibe Phikwe Citrus Farm. Spanning over 1,000 hectares, the farm is a significant contributor to the local economy, employing more than 200 seasonal workers and 90 permanent staff.
The visit provided an opportunity for the President to observe the farm’s daily operations and engage with both management and employees. During discussions, President Boko reiterated the importance of adopting sustainable farming practices to ensure long-term viability in the agricultural sector.
“The success of enterprises like Selibe Phikwe Citrus Farm demonstrates the potential of agriculture to create jobs, drive economic growth, and uplift communities,” he stated.
Addressing Challenges and Building Capacity
The President acknowledged the challenges faced by farmers, including climate change, limited access to modern farming technologies, and market constraints. He assured stakeholders that his administration is committed to addressing these issues through targeted interventions, including:
• Investment in agricultural research and technology.
• Strengthening support programs for small-scale and emerging farmers.
• Encouraging public-private partnerships to expand market access.
Driving Food Security and Economic Growth
With agriculture at the forefront of his agenda, President Boko aims to position Botswana as a regional leader in sustainable farming and food security. His administration’s focus on agricultural modernization and support for farmers is expected to bolster the sector’s contribution to the economy while reducing dependence on food imports.
As Botswana embarks on this ambitious journey, the government’s efforts to empower farmers and promote sustainable practices signal a renewed commitment to building a resilient and self-reliant nation.
