Sefalana Expands with 10 New Stores, Strengthening Botswana’s Economy. Sefalana, one of Botswana’s leading retail and wholesale groups, has reaffirmed its commitment to economic growth and local investment with plans to open 10 new stores this year. Speaking at the grand opening of Sefalana Hyper Jwaneng, Managing Director Chandra Chauhan emphasized the company’s dedication to keeping profits within Botswana.

“Sefalana is a proudly Botswana-owned company, and all the revenue we generate stays within the country. Even our earnings from international operations are reinvested in Botswana. Supporting Sefalana means supporting Batswana,” Chauhan stated.

Founded in 1974, Sefalana started with just six wholesale stores and a maize mill. Over the years, it has expanded significantly, diversifying its operations and entering new markets. In 1975, it made history as the first company to list on the Botswana Stock Exchange.

Today, Sefalana operates more than 90 stores across four countries, demonstrating its steady regional growth. The company has also become a major employer, increasing its workforce from 233 employees in 1974 to over 5,100 today. This expansion has positioned Sefalana as a key player in Botswana’s retail sector, contributing to job creation and economic stability

With the upcoming 10 new stores, Sefalana continues to strengthen its presence and reinforce its role in supporting local communities and businesses.
