World Bank Delegates Visit Orapa Mine, Exploring Industry Impact and Future Prospects. A delegation from the World Bank recently toured Debswana’s Orapa Mine, gaining firsthand insight into the mining processes and the industry’s role in Botswana’s economic development. The visit was hosted by Mr. Mogakolodi Maoketsa, General Manager of Orapa, Letlhakane, and Damtshaa Mines (OLDM), who highlighted the mine’s contributions to the Boteti Region and beyond.

During the visit, Mr. Maoketsa emphasized the mine’s significant role in supporting local communities and national economic growth. He also introduced the “Orapa Today, Boteti Tomorrow” initiative, which envisions transforming the mining town into a tourism hub through projects such as a game park and museum, aimed at fostering sustainable development in the region.

Representing the World Bank, Mr. Liang Wang expressed appreciation for the opportunity to observe the mine’s operations, particularly its high safety standards and mining efficiency. He acknowledged the importance of Botswana’s mining industry and reaffirmed the World Bank’s commitment to supporting economic diversification efforts in the country.

The visit underscored the strong relationship between Botswana’s mining sector and global development partners, highlighting ongoing efforts to leverage natural resources for long-term economic transformation.
